The Spread Eagle
Welcome to the Spread Eagle
David Pipe and his staff extend a warm welcome to you! Our friendly Pub offers a great choice of quality food and drink, in the beautiful village of Hawkenbury. At any time, you can relax and enjoy our unique atmosphere: our staff are dedicated to making your visit to us memorable for all the right reasons!
We are also proud to be able to offer excellent facilities at the Spread Eagle for your functions: whether you need to hire a room for a small business meeting, or you are organising a private function, we will cater for your specific needs, ensuring that the organisation of your event is a complete success.
Forest Road, Hawkenbury, is on the edge of Tunbridge Wells and is known for its grand homes that stand back from the street in splendid isolation. But non less impressive is the handsome Tudor-style Spread Eagle at the Hawkenbury end.
Since James and Carol Cunningham took over three years ago – adding the pub to the Camden Arms Hotel in Pembury, which they already owned – the Spread Eagle has soared in quality. It now enjoys the same well-deserved reputation as its sister pub for good quality beers, an impressive wine list, a great menu and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
The attention to detail typifies our approach. We change the menu constantly to take advantage of the availability of fresh fish and locally
sourced meat and vegetables. Here, the best seasonal food is served by the best team, turning the Spread Eagle into a byword for good food in an unpretentious, yet homely setting. That setting reflects the pub’s recent refurbishment, both inside and out. This includes new carpeting, a redesign of the rear bar, which now resembles a cosy snug, and the addition of an outside decked eating and drinking area. And as an alternative to in-house dining, the pub has a fish-and-chip takeaway service, where you can phone ahead to pick-up your meal when you arrive, or pop in for a drink while you wait. No wonder that, these days, the Spread Eagle is really flying.
History tells us that our pub dates back to the 16th Century and is one of the oldest buildings in Hawkenbury, nr Tunbridge Wells. Legend says that the pub was originally used by royalty, highwaymen and travellers as a rest stop. Our famous visitors are said to include the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin who had a lady friend in nearby Rusthall and Edward VII (who in 1909 allowed Tunbridge Wells the prefix 'Royal' ) frequently visited the Inn to see his good friend nearby.
Our Village Pub has a happy ghost, who has been heard, laughing heartily, by many a visitor - So when you visit us, listen, its said to be lucky to hear him!
David Pipe, our new Manager and the current inn-keeper of this beautiful building aims to serve you with fine ale, traditional fare and friendly hospitality.

The Bar
The Spread Eagle is everything a true English pub should be. A wonderfully relaxing environment, with a decked area in the summer and crackling log fires in the Winter. Service the way it should be, friendly and knowledgeable. As you would expect, the range of drinks served at the Spread Eagle is both wide and constantly changing. There is a full selection of wines, liqueurs, soft drinks and hot beverages, as well as draught beer and three cask ales.
